As Europe moves toward a circular economy, the European Union’s ambitious goal to make all packaging reusable or recyclable by 2030 is driving a wave of innovation, and new challenges. Simplifying packaging to meet sustainability targets raises crucial questions about food preservation, safety, and waste reduction. The MICROORC project is at the forefront of addressing these challenges, pioneering microbiome-based and digital innovations that extend shelf life, maintain food quality, and empower producers and consumers to make smarter, more sustainable choices. Now entering its second year, MICROORC is turning scientific breakthroughs into practical solutions that redefine how Europe thinks about food, packaging, and sustainability.
