To complement microbial interventions, MICROORC evaluates smart labelling and sensor technologies that detect microbial activity or freshness in real time. These include analog and electronic smart labels capable of detecting temperature fluctuations, volatile organic compounds, and microbial spoilage indicators. Several prototypes, including time-temperature indicators and VOC sensors, are being tested in collaboration with tech providers and food producers. These tools are being evaluated for consumer acceptance across Europe and have the potential to support dynamic shelf-life management, reduce unnecessary discards, and inform both retailers and consumers about product quality.
