Can intelligent packaging help improve food safety, extend shelf life and reduce food waste? And what is needed to bring these innovations closer to consumers?
A new scientific publication linked to the MICROORC project, titled “Intelligent food packaging: A systematic review of consumer perspectives and regulatory framework for adoption,” explores the opportunities and challenges surrounding the adoption of intelligent packaging technologies in the European Union.
Published in Next Research, the study reviews 36 scientific publications and 31 policy documents, examining consumer perceptions, regulatory frameworks and the factors influencing the uptake of intelligent packaging solutions.
The findings highlight the potential of these technologies to support better shelf-life management and food waste reduction. However, challenges remain, including consumer awareness, price sensitivity, safety concerns and regulatory uncertainties.
The research also emphasises the importance of clear communication, consumer trust and appropriate regulatory frameworks to facilitate the adoption of intelligent packaging technologies. While their potential is promising, further evidence is needed to demonstrate their actual impact on food safety, sustainability and food waste reduction.
By addressing the intersection of food innovation, consumer acceptance and regulation, this publication contributes to MICROORC’s broader ambition to support safer, more sustainable and innovative food systems.
